Catherine Sloper an unattractive young heiress, lives with her father in New York in the first half of the 19th century. One day, she meets the handsome, charming – but penniless – Morris Townsend and falls in love with him. Catherine’s father thinks that Morris is only interested in her money and so does everything he can to stop the marriage.
